Thumbnails for Illustration I

Our next project, after the preparation H one is to take a "vintage" film and create a black and white image based on it that tells you what the story is about. I selected The Lodger, took 116 screencaps and proceeded to do some doodles and then serious thumbnails.
Should be a good project. All for now,

Some Daily Doodles...

The theme on Wednesday was Rainbow, then Car (apparently I cannot draw cars), Glasses and then House. The small thumbnails are for a gift painting for my friend who just had a baby.
More to come!

2 classes worth of figure.

Last figure class was bad. Or, maybe it wasn't. Part of it was bad. We started with some gestures:
1-Minute

And I decided it was time to do change it up. The way I have been doing gestures was obviously not working, the oblong, roundy shapes I used for limbs were okay but I wanted to move faster. My solution? Stick figures. Yes, just like being a kid again. ^_^ In my mind I was bringing the figure back to step 1, super-basics and I figured that I could move out from there, maybe I'd get better faster once I got good at the stick figures? Not bad logic all told. You can compare the above 1-minute gestures to the ones from last Thursday's class. I personally think they're an improvement already. Anyway, after a ton of short gestures we moved on to a few longer gestures:
5-Minute

And then we spent the rest of the class (1 hour) on a contour drawing. I was fine with that, it was going well, but here comes the suck part... Forgard told me the head was too big. He was right and I erased it...and re-drew it...and erased it again, 'cause now it was too small... and all told I must've drawn that head around 5 times and you know what? It still wasn't right. So I erased the whole thing because we had 15 minutes left in the class.

Moving along we have today. Today has been a WEIRD day. I went to my morning class, it got cancelled half-way through because my professor was coughing so bad he could no longer talk. So myself and a friend went to do our history homework in the library. Then I got a text saying that Joe was headed to lunch and I should meet him there. He did not eat lunch, or share his artwork, or talk much and after lunch he dumped me... and there's a part of me that thinks "Dick." everytime I run through that story in my head. But the fact is, when he explained his reasons, he's doing the right thing. I think he will be the better for having dated me, however briefly and we are still friends. So I know, why am I posting this here, right? Well, after I returned the few things I had of his, he left and I went to the gym, and then on to figure after that. And here's where it becomes relevant: I had the best figure class I have had in a very long time. I didn't do a single page of gestures that sucked ass, and I was mostly happy with both of the long poses:

30-Second

1-Minute

2-Minute

Then, following this long series of gestures and a critique of the contour drawings (which I could only partially participate in thanks to having erased my drawing) we did two half-hour poses:

30-Minute (I am giving the blue one to the model as a goodbye gift)

So you see, I have always believed that I do better work when I am alone, and here I am, proven quite right. That is more than enough for now!

Something to do

Okay, so here's what I'm doing. I've made a list of 100 ideas. Simple ideas. And every day I will do at least one of them. Here are the first two:
The ideas here were "Dog" and "Sit", the corgi is from on-line reference, but the girl is obviously not. I think this will be fun. Little, no pressure images, to keep me drawing outside of class. ^_^ 'cause I need to draw more.

First Figure Work of the Semester

I drew in my figure sketchbook the first figure class we had, so this is really the first figure work of the semester. The model was a little hard to draw due to the fact that she had very large breasts for her frame. We did a great many gestures, which were helpful, then we moved on to 5 and then 10 and one 20 minute drawing. So, here we go!

1-Min

5-Min

10-Min

20-Min, I muffed up the face so bad! ...but I actually like the rest of the body...

I post the gestures mainly because I tried something new with the gestures last class and I think it should be interesting to compare, once I post the new ones.

Illustration I, First semester, final project

Our Final project from Illustration I last semester was to make character designs and a book cover based on REALLY vague descriptions such as "Bear, he's friendly". These are the designs I came up with:
And the bookcover:
I was really pressed for time so the book cover isn't done really, but I like it. Anyway, in class one of the guys said that the eyes made the animals scary. One of the girls disagreed and said they were cute. Overall the response was good and I'm happy with it.
All for now. Love and coffee,

Break Stuff 3: The Experiment Continues

The error in the previous experiment was that the resolution I did the lines at was very low. So I wanted to try again and do the lines large enough that I could print it and all... but... {sigh}
Sketch, no idea how long it took, but it's old and has some problems to start with,
Lines took 37 Minutes,
Flats took 32 min (9:17-9:54-10:26)

I intentionally picked a sketch that would take some correction but working at the higher-resolution... I don't know... there's something very different, and it was hard, I don't think there is a single line-segment I drew less than twice. I am going to try again, tomorrow, I don't know whatI should do differently, but there's something wrong with the linework, I am doing something wrong. I do not know what it is...

Break Stuff 2: A little Experiment

Of late I have been increasingly of the opinion that I oughtn't to use digital media at all, since in my case the tablet seems to take longer than traditional media. I was starting to feel like I am just too slow to be an illustrator, which is kind of a scary thought. So I did an experiment. I asked one of my peers, Joe Johnson, to take the sketch I did and time how long it took for him to ink it. I did the same.

I don't know how long the sketch took,

Inking took me 28 min,

Flats took 31 minutes,

Shading took and hour and 19 minutes. (7:57-8:25-8:56-10:15)

Mr. Johnson took 29 minutes, but his linework is far more interesting:
This image is the creation and property of Joseph Johnson.

So, I think I can continue to play with digital, but I do need to make my linework more interesting. Hopefully with practice I can move faster... I am thinking I will throw a background on the piece, justa leetle one! So, if I do, it'll be posted ^_^
